How to Respond to Early Morning Wakings

Angelica VidelaPublished June 2025Updated April 2026

When your baby wakes at 5am, the decision about how to respond is more important than most people realise. What you do in those first few minutes can either support the pattern or start to gently challenge it.

Quick Answer

Responding consistently to early waking is important. Fully starting the day too early, or responding differently each morning, tends to reinforce the pattern rather than change it.

What to Avoid

Starting the day fully. If you bring your baby downstairs, turn the lights on, and begin the morning routine at 5am, you are signalling that 5am is the correct time to be up. This makes it harder to shift.

Feeding to buy time. If your baby is not hungry but feeding temporarily sends them back to sleep, it can strengthen the feed-to-sleep association at early morning specifically.

Doing something different every day. Responding differently each morning — sometimes a feed, sometimes rocking, sometimes bringing them into your bed — makes the signal unclear and the pattern harder to shift.

What Tends to Help

Keeping the environment sleepy. Dark room, quiet, minimal interaction, low stimulation — all of this signals that sleep time is not over.

A consistent, calm response. Whatever you decide to do, doing it the same way each morning helps your baby understand what to expect.

Addressing the schedule. Morning response alone rarely fixes early rising. Looking at the whole day — naps, wake windows, bedtime — is usually where the real change happens. Learn more about how I work with families to address this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I let my baby cry at 5am?

That is entirely your choice and depends on your approach to sleep. What matters more is consistency — whatever you do should be done the same way each morning.

Is it ok to bring my baby into bed after an early wake?

For many families this is a practical solution. The consideration is whether it is reinforcing the wake time or helping everyone get more rest. Both can be true simultaneously.

If early mornings feel stuck no matter what you try, a personalised plan can help.
