Gentle Sleep Training vs Cry It Out

Angelica VidelaPublished June 2025Updated April 2026

The term sleep training is often used as if it means one thing — leaving your baby to cry until they stop. But that is not what all sleep support looks like, and it is definitely not the approach I use.

Quick Answer

Gentle sleep training focuses on responsive, gradual change with parental support throughout. Cry it out relies on leaving a baby to cry without support. They are fundamentally different approaches.

What Cry It Out Actually Means

Cry it out (also called extinction) involves placing your baby in the cot and leaving them until they fall asleep — without going back in, regardless of how long they cry. It can work for some families, but it is not right for everyone and it is not the only option.

What Gentle Sleep Training Involves

Gentle sleep training is not a single method — it is a philosophy. It means making changes to sleep in a way that is responsive, gradual, and emotionally supportive for both your baby and you.

That might include adjusting the schedule, shifting sleep associations gradually, introducing a consistent settling routine, or reducing overnight feeds in a paced and supported way. Your baby is not left alone. You are present, responsive, and guiding the change. Learn more about how I work with families.

Does Gentle Mean Slow?

Not necessarily. Many families see meaningful improvement within one to two weeks using a gentle approach. It tends to take a little longer than extinction methods, but for most families the emotional cost is much lower.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gentle sleep training effective?

Yes. Research supports that responsive sleep support can lead to improved sleep without negative emotional outcomes for babies or parents.

How is it different from just waiting for sleep to improve on its own?

Gentle sleep training is active and structured. It is not the same as doing nothing and hoping sleep matures. It involves specific, consistent changes made deliberately.

Can I do gentle sleep training with a breastfed baby?

Absolutely. Gentle approaches can be adapted for breastfed babies at any age.

If you want better sleep but are not comfortable with cry it out, you have options.
