How Many Night Wakings Are Normal by Age?

Angelica VidelaPublished June 2025Updated April 2026

One of the questions I am asked most often is whether a baby's night waking is normal. The honest answer is that it depends — on age, feeding needs, developmental stage, and the full sleep picture.

Quick Answer

What is normal depends on age. Newborns wake often for feeding and that is expected. As babies get older, frequent waking is not always something you simply have to accept.

Night Waking by Age

0 to 3 months: Waking every 2 to 4 hours is completely normal and often necessary for feeding. Sleep is not yet organised into predictable cycles. Days and nights can feel mixed together.

4 to 5 months: Many babies begin to show more organised sleep patterns, though frequent waking is still common. The 4-month regression often appears here as sleep architecture permanently matures.

6 to 8 months: Some babies naturally begin to consolidate sleep. One to two night feeds may still be appropriate. Waking more than 3 times a night consistently is often worth looking at.

9 to 12 months: Most babies can biologically manage longer stretches. Frequent waking at this age is usually related to schedule or sleep associations rather than hunger.

12 months and beyond: One night waking or none is common for healthy toddlers. Frequent waking tends to have a clear cause that can be gently addressed.

Normal Does Not Always Mean Sustainable

This is important. Something can be developmentally normal and still feel completely unsustainable for your family. You do not need to wait until your baby is a certain age to get support — especially if you are exhausted and struggling. Learn more about how I help families.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for a 6-month-old to wake 4 times a night?

It is not unusual, but it is often changeable. At 6 months, most babies do not need 4 feeds overnight. Frequent waking is usually linked to sleep associations or schedule.

When do babies naturally sleep through the night?

There is no single answer. Some babies sleep long stretches from early on. Others need gentle support to get there. Most babies can sleep 6 to 8 hour stretches by 6 months with the right conditions.

My baby only wakes once — is that a problem?

Not necessarily. One night waking can be completely fine depending on age. What matters is whether it is sustainable for you and whether it is increasing over time.

If night wakings are affecting your wellbeing, you do not have to wait it out alone.
